The DBT Skills practice through art workbook for Youth (16–25+) gives you practical, evidence-based tools to strengthen your Social and Emotional Literacy (SEL) through creativity and personal growth. It introduces core Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills in a structured, accessible format built for young people.

This workbook can be used on your own or alongside a parent, counsellor, or trusted adult. It is part of the ArtBeat DBT Skills practice through art series and is paired with a companion video course available through ArtBeat membership. A Coaching Guide for parents and trusted adults is also available separately.

What This Workbook Covers

Introduction to Survival Mode and Behaviour
This section explains what happens in the brain and body during high stress. You will learn to recognize survival responses and understand how they affect your choices and relationships.

Goal Setting
You will identify personal goals and create a clear plan to work toward them. This section connects your values to your daily actions.

Anytime Skills
These skills can be used at any time, whether you are calm or not.

WiseMind123: A step-by-step process for accessing grounding practices and balanced thinking when emotions are high

Safety Plan: A personalized plan to cope ahead during challenging, risky or crisis moments

New-Me Activities: A toolkit of activities that help you to effectively regulate your emotions, mind-body-soul-emotion.

Calm-Only Skills
These skills work best when you are calm. Practising them in calm moments helps you to make the most effective decisions, in the moment and for your future.

Problem Solving: A structured approach to breaking down problems and identifying proactive solutions

Expressing Myself: Skills for communicating what’s on your mind and in your heart

Getting it Right: How to ask for what you want/need AND how to say no

Relationship Care: Tools for maintaining healthy, balanced relationships with yourself and others

5 DBT Art Activities
Five guided art exercises that correspond to key skill areas in the workbook. Each activity gives you a creative way to process and apply what you are learning. No prior art experience is needed.

DBT Monitoring
A tracking section to help you observe your emotions, behaviours, and skill use over time. Regular monitoring builds self-awareness and visually tracks your progress and growth.

DBT Reflection Questionnaire
A structured reflection tool to help you check-in, acknowledge areas for growth, celebrate progress, and set intentions for continued practice.

Who This Workbook Is For

This workbook is written for youth and young adults ages 16–25+. It is the foundational workbook in the series and does not require any prior experience with DBT. It is suitable for personal use, therapeutic support, group settings, and educational programs.

If you have already completed this workbook or are ready for deeper skill work, the Advanced workbook for Youth & Young Adults is available separately.
